Overview

Arm and thigh reduction surgery aims to improve the contour of the inner thighs and upper arms by removing excess skin and fat. This surgery is often combined with liposuction to achieve the best result while sometimes improvement can be achieved by liposuction alone.

This surgery is often considered after significant weight loss. It may also be considered due to skin laxity, when your skin has a tendency to stretch or is already quite stretched and liposuction on its own is not an option.

The procedures are very effective for contour improvement when clothed. The results may be less satisfactory when the scars are exposed.

You should note these procedures are not designed for weight reduction.

The operation

Arm reduction can be performed as a day case, but thigh reduction usually requires 1-2 nights in hospital. They are often able to be performed at the same time as other procedures. These procedures are performed under a general anaesthetic in a private hospital.

Arm reduction surgery requires an incision from the armpit to the elbow to remove the excess tissue.

Thigh reduction surgery involves an incision from the groin down the inner side of the thigh to remove the excess tissues.

In both types of surgery, liposuction may be used to remove small pockets of fat.

After the operation

Recovery is over 2-3 weeks and we recommend a pressure garment is worn for up to six weeks to support healing. This is especially important if liposuction was performed as part of the procedure. You will need to restrict vigorous exercise such as gym work for at least 6 weeks.

Results

The outcome for you will be a marked improvement in the contour of your arms and thighs. This will look best when you are clothed and the scars are hidden.

For medial arm reduction the scarring is either in the armpit, if the skin reduction is small, or running down the inner aspect of the upper arm. For thigh reduction (medial thigh lift) there will be a scar in the groin crease extending down the inner side of the thigh towards the knee.

Risks

Arm and thigh surgery can be quite extensive and complications are always a possibility.

Your scars may stretch with time and are sometimes quite obvious. Common minor complications experienced include slow wound healing and small fluid collections (seromas).

Your surgeon will inform you at your consultation about risks of complications.
